The Value of Saving Coral Reefs Now

Biodiversity – the range of species we share our planet with – is important, but can we put a value on it? And can we estimate the benefits and costs of conservation?

Professor Anil Markandya and two other economists (Luke Brander and Alistair McVittie) have written three new, scientific papers for my think tank, the Copenhagen Consensus.

They find that not only can we estimate the costs and benefits for some projects but also that conservation can be a great investment.

A target to preventing the loss of coral reefs will for each dollar spent deliver at least $24 of environmental benefits. Likewise, the researchers find that reducing future loss of forests by half would likely do about $10 of good for each dollar spent.

In Egypt, about 0.1% of the country is forested. The economists also find that increasing protected areas is likely to be a poor target, an important point as 11.2% of Egypt is already protected. This matters because the global community, spearheaded by the UN, is currently working to formulate a set of key targets, which will guide how resources are used from this year until 2030. These follow on from the Millennium Development Goals, an ambitious set of targets that directed hundreds of billions of development dollars since 2000.

The problem is that, right now, most interest groups understandably battle to include their favourite targets, but having more than a thousand potential targets leaves the world with no priorities. That is why the Copenhagen Consensus is helping by asking top economists to analyse what works and what we can afford. Of course, some of the obvious issues relate to adequate food, clean water and better schooling and healthcare.

But humans don’t live separately from the natural world. Rather, we rely on it for many different benefits or what experts call “ecosystem services”. For example, forests don’t just provide timber and firewood, but also provide flood protection, because they can soak up intense rainfalls – for instance, a big part of the reason Pakistan had such hugely damaging floods in 2010 was because large parts of its upper forests had been cut down.

Here, forests could have protected many of the poor that now saw their homes flooded or even their kids perish. Forests also provide residents near-by with beauty experiences, while drawing in tourism, generating more benefits. At the same time, growing forests take up carbon dioxide from the air and lock it away for decades or even centuries while producing oxygen. Forests also provide refuge for enormous numbers of bird, animal and plant species, especially found in tropical rainforests.

 All of these benefits can be valued.

Timber has a commercial price, so that is straightforward. Locking away carbon can be priced based on likely costs of avoided climate damage, and likewise flood protection value shows up as reduced future floods. There is also a value for recreation and tourism, but not all of this is paid for by the users. Moreover, preserving species clearly have a benefit, but typically not one we pay for. This is where putting a price on natural resources become more difficult, and economists have to fall back on surveys which ask people how much they are willing to pay to keep forests in place. That makes it more difficult to put a firm value on a hectare of forest, but the academics all agree that spending a dollar is likely to do more than a dollar worth of good. The most likely outcome of a series of cost-benefit analyses shows that setting the goal “reduce global forest loss by 50%” is likely to do about $5-$15 worth of social good for every dollar spent.

 The same kind of analysis suggests that preserving wetlands could be a good deal. The economists show that reducing global wetland loss by 50% will very likely do more good than its cost and most likely fall in the same range of about $10 back on each dollar.

More spectacular is the analysis for coral reefs, which act as both fishery hatcheries and fishing resources while storing abundant numbers of species. At the same time, coral reefs possess an amazing beauty, which both shows up in large tourism revenues but also in most individuals saying they are willing to pay a certain amount to make sure they continue to exist for our grandchildren. Coral reefs are found in 109 countries, but significant reef degradation has occurred in 93, according to the conservation organisation WWF.

The economists’ analyses illustrate that reducing global coral loss by 50% may cost about $3bn per year but the total benefits likely run to at least $72, or about $24 back for every dollar invested. However, economics also reveals poor targets: focusing to substantially increase protected areas is likely to cost so much – close to a trillion dollars – that it will generate less environmental benefit than the cost. Of course, as we look to the next 15 years, we have to spend most of our focus on the obvious wrongs with billions of people that are poor, lack food, water, health and education.

But these analyses suggest that carefully crafted, environmental targets should also be a part of this solution. Our job is to make sure that economic arguments are heard so we pick the smart targets but drop the poor ones, to make sure the next 15 years help the world and its inhabitants as much as possible.

For many developing coastal nations, artificial reefs provide a cheap option to attract tourists in an otherwise poor market. The placement of artificial reefs leads to a long term profit, where tourists will continue to visit, and fisheries will see increased populations and production.

If placed close to shore, in an easily accessible area, increased and easily located fish populations attract tourists interested in fishing. An increased volume of tourists attracted by the reefs will create a demand for hotels, restaurants, and other markets associated with tourism.

Can Underwater Parks Protect Coral? - Video

With global threats like ocean warming and acidification, it's a tough time to be a coral. Marine scientists John Bruno and Elizabeth Selig, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, analyzed over 8,000 coral surveys from all over the world to see if local management through Marine Protected Areas had any positive effect on coral.

Corals make their skeletons out of calcium and carbonate ions from seawater, constructing massive colonies as large as cars and small houses. As the ocean absorbs excess carbon dioxide from fossil-fuel burning, it spurs chemical reactions that lower the pH of seawater, a process known as ocean acidification. The process removes carbonate ions, making them less available for corals to build skeletons.

Artificial Reefs Key to Mass Tourism Dive Industry


"In the tourism game creating memories is everything," explains the Head of Development at Reef Worlds, Dave Taylor.

“If you can create a tourism memory then you have won your game. You have won everything, because that’s a memory that never leaves a potential client, and they always come back to it,” Taylor told the Phuket Gazette in an exclusive interview.

Reef Worlds was established three years ago with the goal of working alongside resorts to create sustainable artificial reef systems that help reduce tourism pressures on natural reefs. Reef Worlds are fully monetized discrete mini-marine “protected areas” within the resort’s own footprint, allowing them to brand the signature underwater experiences of their guests, explained Taylor.

“It’s something NGOs [non-government organizations] have been trying to do for years; engage developments to take stake in their oceans. Reef Worlds combines conservation with tourism to get the best out of both worlds,” he said.

We now have the technology, interest and mass tourism to allow for a company like ours to come to the fore and really blow out traditional perceptions of what an artificial reef is, Taylor added.

The company, based in Los Angeles in the United States, targets mass tourism across the globe. Reef Worlds has already visited Phuket to talk with two potential clients and is now in the concept stage for those projects.

Taylor pointed out that despite the good work being done by many artificial-reef-building NGOs there is little tourism value in what they do – and tourism drives the economy, especially true in places such as Phuket.

“What we are trying to do is build iconic forms underwater. Forms that people will approach and know from a distance...then when they get really close, they are truly blown away,” Taylor said.
Reef Worlds is attempting to create a moment for tourists akin to when Doctor Howard punched through the Valley of the Kings and shined his light inside. When asked what he saw, he whispered back, “I see incredible things”.

“We’ve got a great team. There are guys (with us) who worked on major films, you name any Hollywood blockbuster that was really unique and eye popping (and) they worked on it,” Taylor explained.

During the design phase of a project, Reef Worlds looks at what iconic design forms are used at the resort and then works with those themes to create a “seamless transition from land to ocean,” Taylor said.

However, Reef Worlds is balancing it’s revolutionary push into the world of artificial reef construction with the essentials of sustainability.

By using crushed rock, from ancient coral beds, and low PH concrete for their structures they create a “super platform” for wildlife, such as corals to adhere to. These in turn attract the charismatic mega fauna like sharks and manta rays that tourists want to see, explained Taylor.

Taylor admitted Reef Worlds has turned down several projects due to the sites being unsuitable, as the potential clients had asked them to build on “A-class” reefs.

“(We were asked to build on) a beautiful staghorn coral forest, and they were like ‘let’s just move it’”, Taylor said. “They were missing the whole point,” he continued.

What Reef Worlds is looking for are white-sand bottoms or crushed coral flats that are denuded of life. “We promote ‘do no harm tourism'," Taylor said.

As part of their “do no harm tourism” Reef Worlds provides 10 years of follow-up analysis for their reefs.

Reef Worlds is confident that their pieces, weighing between 4,500 to 18,000 kilograms are not going anywhere and guarantees them against category five hurricanes.

“If they actually come off the bottom we’ll replace them at our cost,” Taylor said.

Each individual piece can be stamped up to five times allowing a resort that only has ten designs to have fifty shapes put into the water.

“We design it to be cost effective for the resorts,” Taylor said.

A three acre site might cost US$ 100,000 and a project with all the bells and whistles from a kiddy tide pool to baited monoliths could cost up to US$ 1 million .

The reefs are a marketing tool, as each site will be completely branded to the resort with its own name and back story, explained Taylor.

“You need a little vision,” admits Taylor, “I’ve had conversations with folks who don’t dive and have been in the resort business for so many years, and they just look at us blankly – wait there is something beyond the hide tide mark?”

After serious coral bleaching and the amount of pressure on reef systems, wildlife is on the move, and people are going with it, Taylor said.

“We are trying to hold down the fort by giving folks what they want to really interact with,” he added.

“A Reef Worlds artificial reef is the ultimate marketing tool, because no one else has it. Holiday memories are being created and branded to you [the resort].

“And guests are going to take videos and images and put them up on social media sites, which gives exposure in a way you just can’t get to yet,” he said.

The Navy’s New Robot Looks and Swims Just Like a Shark


The American military does a lot of work in the field of biomimicry, stealing designs from nature for use in new technology. After all, if you’re going to design a robot, where better to draw inspiration than from billions of years of evolution?

The latest result of these efforts is the GhostSwimmer: The Navy’s underwater drone designed to look and swim like a real fish, and a liability to spook the bejeezus out of any beach goer who’s familiar with Jaws.

The new gizmo, at five feet long and nearly 100 pounds, is about the size of an albacore tuna but looks more like a shark, at least from a distance. It’s part of an experiment to explore the possibilities of using biomimetic, unmanned, underwater vehicles, and the Navy announced it wrapped up testing of the design last week.

The robot uses its tail for propulsion and control, like a real fish. It can operate in water as shallow as 10 inches or dive down to 300 feet. It can be controlled remotely via a 500-foot tether, or swim independently, periodically returning to the surface to communicate. Complete with dorsal and pectoral fins, the robofish is stealthy too: It looks like a fish and moves like a fish, and, like other underwater vehicles, is difficult to spot even if you know to look for it.

Happy Thanksgiving - Recipe

During this wonderful time of year when families gather across the USA the team at Reef Worlds would like to wish you all the very best Thanksgiving.

Here's a fun recipe for "Standing Velociraptor Roast," in case you still haven't decided on a theme yet.


Standing Velociraptor Roast
One Velociraptor Forearm, or Haunch

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

Separate heads of roasted garlic into cloves and squeeze the roasted garlic out of the peels. Place the garlic in a small bowl and mash with the back of a fork until mostly smooth. Add 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, the rosemary and thyme, and stir to blend. Pat this mixture evenly over the top and sides of the Velociraptor Roast. Place a trimmed strip of dino fat over the garlic-herb mixture and tie with kitchen string in several places to secure the fat onto the top of the roast (remove claws).

Season the roast all over with the remaining 2 1/2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Place the roast in a roasting pan and add 1 1/2 cups red wine and 1/2 cup beef stock to the bottom of the pan. Roast for 20 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees F and continue to roast to the desired degree of doneness, about 18 minutes per pound for rare and 22 minutes per pound for medium. Let stand at least 5 minutes before carving. De-fat the pan juices and serve alongside the dinosaur.

If making au jus, place the roasting pan on the stove burners over medium-high heat. Add 1 cup red wine and scrape the browned bits on the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Add 2 cups dino stock and season with salt and pepper. Continue to cook until the wine is reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Strain the sauce through a sieve to remove the solids before serving. De-grease, if necessary.

Underwater attractions key for future of Middle East tourism

Developer Reef Worlds completes design for world’s largest underwater theme park in Dubai

Recent developments in artificial reefs and other underwater attractions are set to become an important part of the Middle Eastern travel and tourism market, as countries in the region begin to get serious about entering the US $3 billion dive and snorkel marketplace.
 
This is the opinion of Reef Worlds CEO Patric Douglas who, speaking ahead of his appearance at the Future Tourism Summit this December, also announced that design work on the world’s largest underwater theme park, The Pearl of Dubai, has now been completed. The five-acre park has been modelled after the mythical lost city of Atlantis and inspired by the look of recent Hollywood films.
“Reef Worlds addresses a critical problem [cities such as] Dubai have with the lack of water based tourism or footprint in the global $3 billion dollar dive and snorkel marketplace. In the waters in and around Dubai there are few, if any, underwater engagement points,” said Douglas.

“Resort developers along Dubai’s ever expanding coastline are just now realizing that with the creation of Dynamic Reefs, unique sites that are designed for habitat and tourism, they can increase revenues, client satisfaction and give a much needed boost to degraded regional habitats,” he added.
In addition to its Dubai development, Reef Worlds has also received interest for similar projects in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, while Oman and Bahrain have already made huge investments into artificial reefs.

Patric Douglas is one of the international tourism experts who will appear at the Future Tourism Summit, due to be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre on 9–10 December, 2014.

As part of the show he will be sharing more information and expertise from his work on The Pearl of Dubai, as well as revealing his thoughts and feelings on the future of travel and tourism in the Middle East.

Hawkes' earlier designs include submersibles seen in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only," and James Cameron's "Aliens of the Deep."

Dreaming of Underwater Cities

Will people ever live in underwater cities?

Japanese construction firm says it is possible by 2030. The visionaries revealed a $25 billion deep-sea eco-city plan called Ocean Spiral for 5,000 people that will produce energy from sea resources.

Many have pondered the idea of living under the sea while sci-fi film directors such as George Lucas tempted our imagination with stunning images of underwater cities. Such was the Gungan city consisting of a mass of hydrostatic bubbles shown in the first part of the “Star wars” epic space film series.

Now a Japanese construction firm Shimizu Corp. says that building an underwater residential area is not a fantasy and aims to build one by 2030 – in just 15 years.

This is a real goal, not a pipe dream,” the Shimizu spokesman Hideo Imamura told the Guardian.
The outlandish plan envisages a spiral-shaped structure comprised of three major sections. Floating slightly above the surface the structure will be topped by a 500-meter sphere.

The central part is a spiral 15km long with room for business zones, residential areas and hotel rooms for about 5,000 people, according to the plan.

The design for the grandiose structure was determined jointly with researchers from University of Tokyo, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the government’s Fisheries Research Agency.

Shimizu Corp is planning to use technologies it thinks will be plausible in the future such as an industrial-scale 3-D printer and to build the Ocean Spiral out of resin instead of concrete.
Construction costs are estimated by the company at 3 trillion yen ($25.6 billion) and the building phase is expected to take five years.

"It would be great if research institutions and governments become interested in our project," said Masaki Takeuchi, the manager of the project, as quoted by Asahi Shimbun.

The Coral Whisperer and Dying Reefs

In a sanctum that few outsiders glimpse—the laboratory at the New England Aquarium—Liz Burmester pushes through two swinging doors signed The Coral Room (or the Room of Requirement). The parenthetical, a reference to the ever-morphing chamber in the Harry Potter books, attests to the room’s multiple purposes. Mesmerizing blue blubber jellyfish live here, for example, but the room is mainly about coral.

Against one wall, 16 fish tanks, stacked on two parallel shelves, hold trays containing 400 Astrangia poculata (northern star corals) for Burmester’s experiments.

Burmester (GRS’16) dons a white lab coat and protective glasses and takes a small specimen of a coral colony to a work counter. Using a scalpel, she scrapes a tiny bit of tissue from the colony, then cleans the wound with a Waterpik. Depending on this coral’s resilience, it should heal over the next 30 to 60 days.

“I feel a little bad about it,” Burmester, a vegetarian, says of the infliction, even though she knows that the coral’s primitive nervous system almost certainly can’t feel pain, and its cousins in the wild endure all sorts of injuries from predators, storms, and humans. Burmester talks like a loving pet owner about these animals that look like rocks. “We feed them shrimp in a slurry,” she says. “It’s pretty cute. We use a turkey baster.”

Corals are nature’s mishmash: animals with stony skeletons and a plant-like hunger for sun-derived energy, obtained from symbiotic photosynthesizing algae living inside the coral. Dubbed the “rain forests of the sea,” coral reefs house up to 25 percent of marine species—including an estimated one-tenth of the fish eaten worldwide—and that’s just the beginning of their beneficence. They shelter coastline communities against storms and hurricanes; they’re a source of proteins that appear to block HIV infection; and they’re tourism magnets, with the United Nations estimating that a square kilometer of reef powers at least $100,000 of business annually.

Yet around the world, coral reefs are dying. Pollution, coastal development, harmful fishing practices, and warming and acidifying waters from fossil fuel emissions have conspired to threaten 75 percent of reefs worldwide, a percentage expected to swell to almost 100 percent by mid-century, says John Finnerty, a College of Arts & Sciences associate professor of biology. He is a faculty mentor to Burmester, who studies A. poculata in hopes of finding better diagnostic tools for sick reefs. Her work is part of a collaboration, called Coral Whisperer, between BU and the Virginia-based environmental group Conservation International.

Old tires, toilets, navy ships, oil platforms, retired subway cars, and airplanes, have all either intentionally or unintentionally, been converted into artificial reefs due to the indomitable nature of marine life. Which of these reefs is not like the other?

Oil platforms, because unlike the pile of old tires or deserted toilets, platforms span the entirety of the water column, from seafloor to ocean surface, and for years, as the oil companies have been drilling, pumping, and producing, ecosystems have quietly been colonizing, thriving and taking over the legs, crossbeams and joints of these massive structures.

This is what makes the Rigs to Reefs program different, no construction required- plus 50-60 years of living proof of its effectiveness functioning as an established artificial reef, making the title “Rigs to Reefs” a bit of a misnomer.

At a first glance, artificial reefs seem to be a relatively new phenomenon, but in fact, they’ve been a part of coastal marine life for hundreds of years. Whether created to protect strategic areas from hostile weather, guard against attacking enemy forces or to improve fish stocks, man has thrown all kinds of objects imaginable into the water. Some of the earliest man-made reefs were created in Japan in the 1600s to improve fish stocks.

In India, villagers create triangular concrete structures utilizing the sand from their beaches and then sink them in order to address the damage done by commercial trawling in the area. In the US, the first documented artificial reef in the United States was off South Carolina in the 1830s and was constructed using log huts. More recently, the sinking of naval vessels for artificial reefs, as part of the ‘Ships-to-Reefs’ program, has become relatively common practice and serves several purposes. It creates new ocean habitat and a tourist destination, while also relieving the Navy of outdated ships. From the 1830’s to the present, over 80% of artificial reefs in United States waters have been created using secondary use materials.

If an Artificial Reef is created....

...and no one hears about it, does it have an impact?

That's the question we asked ourselves last week when considering an amazing project in Oman at The Wave, Muscat.

Never heard of it?

At close to 1.2 miles long with over 60 reefs and 20 locations costing millions of dollars you should have heard about it. It's one of the best examples of AR creation in the region, it's leadership, design and tourism all in one and yet, very few people outside of the AR community know about this project.

That's a problem.

With the exception of a few high profile ship drops and Dynamic Reefs in Cancun and Bahamas our industry faces an uphill battle with every project we create - rich media exposure and the lack of it.

We create unique habitat and tourism spaces in an, "out of sight out of mind" medium, projects like the one in Oman should have an ongoing media component baked in to educate, entertain, and expose AR's and what AR's accomplish to the rest of the world in a concise and compelling manner.

The global AR industry is about to change over the next decade, the media landscape for AR's should match the terrestrial landscape for similar projects. Just because we design, build and create worlds underwater doesn't mean they have to be "out of sight and out of mind" anymore.

The Relationship between Diver Experience Levels and Perceptions of Attractiveness of Artificial Reefs - Examination of a Potential Management Too

Abstract

Artificial reefs are increasingly used worldwide as a method for managing recreational diving since they have the potential to satisfy both conservation goals and economic interests. In order to help maximize their utility, further information is needed to drive the design of stimulating resources for scuba divers.

We used a questionnaire survey to explore divers’ perceptions of artificial reefs in Barbados. In addition, we examined reef resource substitution behaviour among scuba divers. Divers expressed a clear preference for large shipwrecks or sunken vessels that provided a themed diving experience. Motives for diving on artificial reefs were varied, but were dominated by the chance of viewing concentrated marine life, increased photographic opportunities, and the guarantee of a ‘good dive’.

Satisfaction with artificial reef diving was high amongst novices and declined with increasing experience. Experienced divers had an overwhelming preference for natural reefs. As a management strategy, our results emphasize the capacity of well designed artificial reefs to contribute towards the management of coral reef diving sites and highlight a number of important areas for future research.

Suggested work should validate the present findings in different marine tourism settings and ascertain support of artificial reefs in relationship to level of diver specialization.

Aside from the financial incentives, developers cite Dubai's willingness to think outside the box as part of the appeal of setting up in the city. 

"Dubai has an overabundance of vision," says Patrick Douglas, the CEO of Reef Worlds, an underwater design company.

Pearl of Dubai will be a five-acre underwater park with a Lost City of Atlantis theme. In addition to luring scuba divers and snorkelers, the underwater attraction will also act as a huge artificial reef, designed to attract and nurture aquatic life.

"We're building for two clients: One has credit cards, the other has fins," jokes Douglas.

When first pitching the sustainable tourism venture, he approached properties in the Caribbean, all to no avail. "I told them, we'd build these sites, they wouldn't have to put up any money up front, and if they happened to make money from them -- which we knew they would -- we could talk about a revenue share.

We didn't get any traction," says Douglas. Dubai, however, was a different story.

"They get it. They can conceive of it and they can produce it," he says.

‘Living Sculptures’ Provide An Underwater Sanctuary, Education, and Tourism

When UK-based artist Celia Gregory first took on scuba diving in 2001 in Zanzibar she was amazed to see how man-made artificial reefs can become a marine sanctuary, drawing tourists and creating real economic values to the surrounding community based on ecotourism.

“Of course as an artist I see it from an artistic perspective,” Gregory tells the Jakarta Globe.
For years Gregory had been a mosaic artist, working on architectural and landscape projects in the United Kingdom. But after her first diving experience, it wasn’t long until she began looking for ways to make artificial reefs as works of art, conveying messages of hope in the fight to save the world’s coral reefs.

“Creativity,” she continues, “has the power to inspire us into action.”

Her journey to create “underwater living sculptures” took her to Indonesia, at the heart of the so-called “coral reef triangle” where she met up with conservation activist Naneng Setiasih, who works as a manager for international NGO, the Coral Reef Alliance.

Naneng, Gregory says, taught her that coral conservation is much like gardening. Corals are first put in a nursery before they are strong enough to survive and grow on their own out at sea. Corals are also competitive and need an optimum distance from each other to increase their chances of survival.

Gregory also learned what materials are most suited for her work to promote coral growth and the fact that she needed to incorporate, in her sculptures, holes and cracks where little fish can hide from predators or seek shelter from the pounding waves.

“It’s an evolution,” she says of her creative process, adding that it is a constant learning experience through trials and errors filled with surprises, figuring out what works and what doesn’t.
Gregory came into Neneng’s life at a time when she was questioning the effectiveness of her mostly scientific approach to coral conservation.

“When I’m writing scientific journals, those who will read it are likely my peers… I’m reaching [out] to the same group of people I’m already working with,” she says.

“Which is why I was really thrilled to collaborate with Celia. We have to do something else to complement what we are already doing.”

According to Naneng, corals are disappearing from overfishing, the use of fish bombs and cyanides as well as pollution and climate change.

In Indonesia alone, 40 percent of the coral reefs are irreversibly damaged and the rest will be at risk by 2050, Naneng says. And that already alarming figure does not take into account the likeliness of an increase in the rate of destruction.

“Something needs to be done to stop this. And we are on a tight deadline to do so,” she says.
But the main problem is, most people can’t seem to relate to the scientific data.

“[The data is] too complicated,” Gregory says. “And the environmental story [conveyed by scientists and activists] is mostly negative; I think people are switching off.”

And so the two partnered, creating living artworks to spread the conservation message to a wider audience.

Among Gregory’s most renowned projects is “the Coral Goddess” in Pemuteran, Bali. The sculpture is of a woman resembling those found in Javanese or Balinese temples: seated in a meditative position surrounded by a wire mesh shaped like a giant lotus, which is now covered in coral.
The sculpture managed to attract a great deal of attention, featured in the cover of travel and diving magazines as well as newspapers the world over. It has successfully attracted tourists, divers and artists looking to create their own works of art to share on their websites and blogs.

It started a conversation about coral conservation, Gregory says, reaching a worldwide audience “that would otherwise not be interested in the subject.”

Her effort also attracted businesses like the UK-based cosmetics retailer Body Shop that sponsored Gregory’s most recent project, a giant sculpture titled “The Mermaid” installed in Bali’s Jemaluk Bay.

Gregory’ work also gets other artists and local volunteers on board in creating underwater galleries in Jemaluk Bay and Amed for divers to enjoy.

The galleries “started a change in societies where the projects are held,” she says. In the past, fishing communities who are now collaborating with the artist reeled in their daily catch without much consideration for the environment. But gradually, they switched to become coral nursers, planters and boat operators ferrying tourists looking to see the underwater works of art, helping to create a thriving economy based on ecotourism.

“Fishing communities which used to destroy the corals are now helping with conservation effort,” she says.

Gregory has also inspired Naneng to get creative in crafting her conservation messages. In 2010, Naneng published a novel targeting the teenage audience with a semi-autobiographical story line revolving around the issue of love, social justice and, of course, the environment.

“Whenever I get feedback from my colleagues about my journals, of course I’m happy. But when I got emails from my readers discussing the environment, there’s another level of excitement because I know I’m reaching out [to an audience],” she says.

But the two discovered that approaching local communities about changing their environmentally destructive habits requires a more traditional strategy; Gregory and Naneng listed the help of community leaders in areas which have been successful in ecotourism.

“So [our efforts will] not [come across] as foreigners preaching,” Gregory says.

The leaders were able to share their knowledge and convince other communities that, in the long run, they will benefit greatly by preserving their coral reefs.

“What I love about this project, the fish benefit [from it], people benefit. It’s more like an ecosystem; it’s expanding, it’s affluent, it’s bountiful,” she says.

Coral sperm and eggs frozen for preservation

A sperm bank for coral. That's the idea at the heart of a pioneering project entering a new phase this weekend to help preserve the biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef.


Dr Rebecca Spindler says half of the reef's coral has been destroyed in the past 30 years and she eventually hopes the technology will be used to restore the reef.

The sperm bank will use IVF technology to cryo-preserve, or freeze, sperm from coral on the reef and save it for the future. Eventually, scientists hope to grow the corals out onto the reef.

If you think about the Great Barrier Reef as a piece of cloth, it looks a little bit like lacework right now because there are so many localised threats. There are degraded areas, there are areas that have been subject to threats that are stopping those areas functioning. If we can restore those areas, reseed those areas and restore function to the reef as a whole, overall it will be more resilient.
