Under the sea - is tourism going beneath the waterline?

Developers are realizing new revenue at sea

Last month, Dubai announced a new attraction that was inspired by a mythical lost city of Atlantis theme park under water.

Dubbed The Pearl of Dubai and located in the waters of The World Islands, the five-acre park will be fully sustainable and it will offer fantastic snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities for all ages.

David Taylor, director of development for Reef Worlds, the Los Angeles-based design company developing the project, said: “Ideally, we would be looking for somebody to be able to walk down the sand and right into the structure."

Mr Taylor added that Dubai still has a long way to go in improving its scuba diving and water exploration, and so his firm is looking to create a new sustainable habitat while generating tourism revenue at the same time. It is hoped that Dubai gets a slice from the industry worth $3 billion.

As noted above, Dubai has its fair share of underwater hotels already, with one currently in the pipeline. Known as the Water Discus hotel, the 21-room site will have large disc-shaped buildings both above and below the water, while the hotel's legs will be the lifts, transporting guests between the two sections.

And with the Mohammed Bin Rashid City arts centre and Dubai's Mall of the World also being developed, it should not take much for Dubai to reach its target of attracting 20 million tourists by the end of the decade.
