Dynamic Reef Ecological Economics

Reef Worlds company philosophy is deeply rooted in Ecological Economics, the meeting place of human economic scales and those of natural world to produce long term sustainable solutions. As global tourism demands for ocean interaction increase, market based solutions like Reef Worlds in tandem with forward thinking resort developments create ways to sustainably manage their growth with the least amount of impact to the surrounding natural resources.

Dynamic Reefs, done right, help local economies as a recent study from Florida has shown. But we have just scratched the surface to what artificial reefs can actually do when a little forward thinking vision is applied.

For example, many Caribbean coral reefs will disappear within the next 20 years unless action is taken to protect them, primarily due to the decline of grazers such as sea urchins and parrotfish, a new report has warned.

A comprehensive analysis by 90 experts of more than 35,000 surveys conducted at nearly 100 Caribbean locations since 1970 shows that the region’s corals have declined by more than 50 percent.

Reef Worlds Artificial Reef Design

Carefully designed and placed five to ten acre Reef Worlds sites on the inshore sand bed areas off resort properties will relieve tourism pressure from the many thousands of non certified divers and snorkelers who should not be on A Class reef habitats while creating spaces for regional wildlife to inhabit. The same larger and smaller fish, crustaceans, and soft corals will quickly propagate Reef World structures, but the structures will not be irretrievably harmed if they are touched, brush against, or molested by unwary tourists. It is a way of looking at the natural world a bit differently.

That’s one small example of next generation tourism based on Ecological Economics. For resort and developments seeking to leave a smaller footprint, cut down on green house emissions, and keep their clients engaged on their properties Reef Worlds makes both economic and ecological sense. Reef Worlds bring engagement, wildlife encounters, and exploration to shore based tourism in areas within our client resorts own footprint.

Reef Worlds structures work not only as tourism draws, marine life aggregators, and set aside marine areas, but they can also act as wave attenuators in smaller and larger bays where seasonal storms often wash away prime beach front at the cost of many millions of dollars globally to resort and developments each and every year.

The world of Ecological Economics has many facets and Reef Worlds is at the forefront of tourism design and the environment where the end result is a win for both human economic scales and those of natural world.
